Taiwan’s Finance Ministry is pushing for reforms at the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) after the bank was criticized by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) for funding projects linked to corruption and authoritarian practices.
The ministry is seeking enhanced transparency, improved loan approval processes, and strengthened governance to align with international standards.
OCCRP’s investigation unveiled that CABEI funded projects causing environmental damage and facilitated corrupt activities, including the misuse of loans for unauthorized purposes.
The Finance Ministry urged for greater scrutiny in loan approvals and utilization to ensure alignment with the bank’s mission of promoting balanced economic and social development in Central America.
