The Argentine working class launched a massive, one-day general strike from April 9 to April 10 against President Javier Milei’s administration and its new austerity measures demanded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This strike, supported by the country’s main Peronist trade union federations, was a direct response to government cuts in wages, benefits, and thousands of layoffs across various sectors.

In Buenos Aires, trade unionists, students, and retired workers joined protests that began on April 9 and extended until midnight Friday, while similar strikes took place nationwide.

The walkout came amid soaring inflation, public anger over IMF loans, and a corruption scandal involving President Milei.

This marks the third general strike since Milei took office in December 2023, following a period of truce between the unions and government that previously allowed harsh labor policies.

The strike highlights deepening tensions as Argentina faces escalating economic and political challenges.
