President Nayib Bukele plans to close this 2024 with a homicide rate of 1.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The first month of our second term, June closed as the safest month in the history of El Salvador. Now, we plan to close 2024 with a rate of 1.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest in the entire Western Hemisphere. Thank God, Bukele posted on his X account on Tuesday.

The publication also includes a video that gives some figures such as that June was a record month with 24 days without homicides, 19 of them consecutive.

He also points out that 134 days without homicides are already counted so far in 2014.

According to the publication, the projected rate of 1.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants will be the lowest in the entire Western Hemisphere.

The projected homicide rate exceeds that ended 2023, which was 2.4 homicides per 200,000 inhabitants, according to data provided in January of this year by the Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro

The homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants, is 2.4 and the average daily homicide year, is 0.4, this places us, at the level of America, in the second country and the first in Latin America; with the lowest homicide rate, just below Canada, which closed with 2.25 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, Villatoro said at the time.

In 2015, there was a rate of 103 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Since March 27, 2022, the government of El Salvador has maintained the regime of emergency due to the increase in homicides that occurred between 25 and 26 of the same month, which left a tragic death toll of 76 murders attributed to gangs. The scheme was approved for 30 days and has been extended every month since then.

This measure suspends the rights of defence, the period of administrative detention of 72 hours and the inviolability of correspondence and telecommunications.

On June 6, the Legislative Assembly approved the 27th extension of the emergency regime after receiving the request of the newly appointed legal secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, Adolfo Muñoz. This new extension will be in force from 10 June to 9 July 2024.
