Tegucigalpa, Honduras.- At the gates of the elections in the United States, various sectors predict that regardless of the results given on November 5, whether they favor the Democratic or Republican Party, U.S. electoral elections will have a direct impact in Honduras.

In the opinion of the expert lawyer in international law, Graco Pérez, the electoral process in the United States will have an impact on the elections of Honduras and its democracy, no matter who achieved the electoral victory, due to the positions that the governments led by both parties have assumed during the last two elections in the country.

Perez also detailed that problems such as migration, the fight against drug trafficking, the denunciation of the extradition treaty, the proximity of Honduras to countries – antagonistic to the United States – and the introduction of Open Heavens with Cuba – could generate greater tension depending on the position taken by the new government in the United States.

“I believe that Honduras must develop a clear foreign policy towards the United States and the rest of the world the issue is that we do not have it and then any government that is either Republican or Democrat, Honduras must know what its objectives are and understand that the United States is a permanent and necessary ally,” he said.

He continued: “Then regardless of who arrives, Honduras must have a foreign policy based on the national interest and adapt it depending on the visions of the government that is governing the United States, because on some issues it could strengthen in some party and in some with each other. For example, with the Republicans on the issue of immigration, the challenge is stronger, but in practice the Democratic governments deported more migrants.

For his part, political analyst and former deputy Raúl Pineda argued that the election of the new U.S. president who will serve in office for the next four years will take place in a contested scenario, which according to the jurist will not modify immigration policies where Republican and Democratic representatives agree.

Both parties talk about the expulsion of illegal immigrants, on this issue the State of Honduras must be prepared, negotiated, create conditions that allow those expelled from the United States not to come here to Honduras to generate another problem, but the American government is in its formal right to decide that foreigner can stay or not, Pineda said.

However, he reiterated that the Honduran government can negotiate in the public or private sphere, as an investment can be sought so that at the time when the deportees come they have something to do, but the social problems will continue to grow.

Antonio Rivera Callejas, deputy of the National Congress for the National Party, said that for Honduras it is practically the same whoever wins (Republican Party or Democrat), the foreign policy of the United States needs an ally to Honduras, because they no longer have Nicaragua and Venezuela. The legal Latino looks at the economy is going to be better off with Trump than with Harris and that’s why they’re giving him the vote.

On his side, the president of the September 15 Foundation, Juan Flores, the election of a new president in the U.S. country is going to have a significant impact on Honduras that will bring changes in the country according to the party that achieved the triumph in the polls on November

From Democrats, we see that they have had passive rhetoric, but still not to be trusted because although we know Vice President Kamala Harris that she is now the presidential candidate. So I think that for any side that is a Republican Democrat, it will have some consequence of the Honduran government, he said.

On the same subject, Flores regretted that we have not had Honduran leaders who really have a real country agenda and a real solution on the issue of migration to the United States, by not presenting a real plan it is very difficult for us to have support from both Republicans and Democrats.

According to the leader of the migrant community, the issue of migration in the United States is being addressed from the perspective of some congressmen as something unresolved so some propose the closure of borders after the elections, so the system would be more restricted which would indirectly hit the country’s foreign exchange reception.

On Tuesday, November 5, Americans will elect their new president for the next four years, craving the Republican Party to the presidency by the former President (2017-2021), Donald Trump. While for the Democratic Party, current Vice President Kamala Harris (2021-2026) will seek to become the first woman to assume the presidency in the United States.
