President Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay has made a significant decision regarding the upcoming inauguration of president-elect Yamandú Orsi.

He has blocked invitations to Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela, reaffirming his stance against authoritarian regimes in the region.

This move aligns with Lacalle Pou’s previous refusal to invite representatives from these countries to his own inauguration in 2020.

Yamandú Orsi emerged victorious over Alvaro Delgado in the recent presidential elections held last November.

As a member of the leftist Frente Amplio party, Orsi’s leadership marks a shift in Uruguay’s political landscape. His inauguration ceremony is scheduled for March 1, where the outgoing president traditionally signs the invitations to delegations from other nations.

Lacalle Pou’s criticism of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela has been consistent, notably during the 2021 CELAC summit.

He addressed the lack of “full democracy” in these nations, framing his diplomatic choices within a broader context of promoting democratic values in Latin America.
