A travel ban imposed on former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been reinforced by the country’s highest court.

Bolsonaro had planned to travel to Washington D.C to attend USA President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

Unfortunately for Bolsonaro, the Supreme Court threw out his appeal against a travel ban.

The decision did not go down well with Bolsonaro who accused the country’s supreme court of persecuting him.

Discussing the development, Bolsonaro said he was facing “huge political persecution by one person.”

An appeal by Bolsonaro’s lawyers filed last Thursday claimed the right-wing politician had fully complied with and respected the precautionary measures imposed on him by the Supreme Court.

The lawyers dismissed any possibility of him fleeing.

Yet justice Alexandre de Moraes did not buy into Bolsonaro’s claims.

Justice Morales rejected that the former president’s request to have his passport returned.

Bolsonaro’s wife Michelle attended Trump’s inauguration.

Bolsonaro has been barred from running for office until 2030 and faces criminal charges for allegedly plotting a coup after his 2022 election defeat.

His passport was retained into state custody in February 2024 on the order of Brazil’s top court who feared he would flee.
