Costa Rica leads exports of medical devices, pineapple and pineapple juice in different markets

Costa Rica has positioned itself as the world’s leading exporter of pineapple and pineapple juice, according to data from Trade Map of the International Trade Centre (ITC).

In addition, the country ranks first in exports of medical devices per capita in the Americas. The export sector of goods and services accounts for 37% of Costa Rica’s GDP and employs more than 600,000 people, said Laura López, general manager of Procomer.

Costa Rica is also the second largest exporter of bananas in the world and the first cassava supplier to the European Union and the fourth for the United States. It also ranks second in exports of fresh lilies and palm trees for the United States.

These strong data are a reflection of the success of this model in our country and the engine of development in which it has become over the decades, Lopez said.

In the January-August period of 2024, exports of goods reached $12.958 million, with growth of 7% year-on-year. The medical, agricultural and food supply sectors experienced increases of 12%, 7% and 5%, respectively.

Currently, the Costa Rican export sector comprises 2,400 companies that ship its products to 168 destinations with 4,400 products.
