More than 700 undocumented migrants, including 75 minors, were rescued while overcrowded in a cellar in the state of Tlaxcala, central Mexico, local authorities reported.
“An operation of the security forces of Tlaxcala successfully resulted in the rescue of 726 Central American migrants, in the municipality of San Antonio Cuaxomulco, this Sunday,” said the State Secretariat of Citizen Security.
Among the migrants, from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, 75 unaccompanied minors were identified, as well as a pregnant woman. Some suffered from dehydration and nervous breakdown, although none have required hospital care.
The Secretary of Citizen Security of Tlaxcala, Alberto Martín Perea Marrufo, has reported that the authorities arrested six individuals on suspicion of committing the alleged crime of human trafficking. These have been placed at the disposal of the competent ministerial authority “in order to delineate responsibilities.”
The governor of Tlaxcala, Lorena Cuéllar, ordered the relevant agencies to provide humanitarian support to rescued migrants with medical care, emotional support and food.
State police reported that they received a call early Sunday warning that there were two trucks in an abandoned cellar. A new warning later indicated that there were people from different vehicles entering the infrastructure.
