A United States citizen, Air Force veteran Joseph St Clair, has been released and returned to the US after nearly six months in Venezuelan custody.
His family confirmed the news following his detention since November of last year.
US President Donald Trump sent special envoy Richard Grenell to negotiate St Clair’s freedom.
Grenell met Venezuelan officials on the Caribbean island of Antigua to arrange the transfer.
“Joe St. Clair is back in America,” Grenell posted, crediting Trump’s “America First” policy for the successful negotiation.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also played a role during discussions with Grenell in Caracas. The release highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts despite tense US-Venezuela relations.
