The Attorney General’s office has formally requested charges against Jorge Glas and eight other former officials, some currently abroad, in connection with alleged misuse of reconstruction funds.

Prosecutors accuse Glas of diverting money raised through increased taxes, including VAT, meant for rebuilding Manabi and Esmeraldas provinces after the earthquake to non-priority projects.

Judge Marco Aguirre stated there are signs Glas committed embezzlement by misapplying these funds, which were intended to aid earthquake recovery.

The prosecution alleges that the money benefited contractors and supervisors unrelated to the reconstruction efforts.

Glas, former vice president under Rafael Correa, was arrested following a raid on the Mexican embassy that led to diplomatic tensions.

His lawyer argues the charges are politically motivated, denying evidence of personal gain or harm to the national treasury.
