Brazil’s former President Fernando Collor de Mello has been arrested following a Supreme Court order after his appeals against a corruption conviction were denied.
He was sentenced to nearly nine years in prison for corruption and money laundering linked to bribes from a Petrobras subsidiary.
Collor, the first president elected after Brazil’s military dictatorship ended in 1985, was detained while traveling to Brasilia to surrender.
Federal police are holding him in the northeastern city of Maceio as legal processes continue.
This arrest highlights ongoing efforts in Brazil to hold political figures accountable for corruption.
The case draws attention to the country’s complex relationship with political scandals and justice enforcement.
