El Salvador presents its nuclear power plan at the IAEA

El Salvador participated on Tuesday in the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in which he presented his nuclear power plan.

El Salvador is present at this general conference withthe commitment to incorporate nuclear energy into our energy matrix, in compliance with international standards and in accordance with the treaties that El Salvador has ratified with the IAEA,The director general of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines, Daniel Álvarez, told more than 170 member countries of the organization.

In July of this year, we passed the Law on the Establishment of the Agency for the Implementation of the Nuclear Energy Program in El Salvador (OIPEN), which will be responsible for formulating, directing and implementing plans and policies to implement nuclear energy, as a source of generation, he said.

Subsequently, the director general of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, published on his official X account a message about the meeting he held with Álvarez and confirmed that this meeting was to discuss plans to include nuclear energy in the Salvadoran energy matrix.

“El Salvador continues to advance its plans to incorporate nuclear energy into its energy matrix, including its interest in SMR (smaller modular reactors),” Grossi said on the social network.

Daniel Álvarez commented that El Salvadorwill seek to use this nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, in addition to participating continuously in the IAEA’s activities.
