Port traffic in Panama up 19.2% through July 2024

Panama’s port system has registered a growth in the movement of containers until July 2024, according to data from the Office of Planning and Statistics of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), updated as of August 12 of this year.

From January to July 2024, the movement of containers reached 3,135,968 units, representing an increase of 19.2% compared to 2,629,843 units in the same period in 2023.

As for the movement by TEU (a 20-foot container unit), there was an increase of 18.5%, from 4,722,746 TEU in 2023 to 5,598,641 in 2024.

The total volume of cargo in ports, both state and private, also reflected a 15% increase. As of July 2024, 70,311,169 metric tons were mobilized, surpassing the 61,566,366 metric tons of the same period last year.

The report also highlighted a slight growth of 1.5% in the transport of domestic passengers by water, with 1,233,685 people mobilized until July 2024, compared to 1,215,187 in 2023.

The MPA has among its functions to manage, promote, regulate, project and implement strategies, standards, plans and programmes related to the operation and development of the maritime sector, as well as to promote, coordinate and implement the national maritime strategy.
