Guatemala’s largest river faces an ecological crisis that also affects its ocean mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To deal with this situation, the Government of the country has allowed the installation of a garbage interceptor in the waters of the Motagua River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Motagua, in Guatemala, is one of the most polluted rivers in Latin America. Saturnino Muyus lives near a mountain where people get rid of their garbage illegally. Undone that the rains will lead to the riverbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with this environmental emergency, the Government of Guatemala allowed the NGO Ocean Clean Up to install an interceptor on its channel to prevent millions of tons of garbage from continuing to reach the Gulf of Honduras and the Caribbean Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This interceptor managed to stop 1,400 tons of plastic in a single rainy night that could then be recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
