The dictator’s son will be at the forefront of agreements between Nicaragua and China
On Tuesday, July 9, dictator Daniel Ortega granted full powers to his son Laureano Ortega Murillo to represent the government in signing agreements with China, which has become the main ally of the dictatorship at the international level.
Presidential Agreement 106-2024 published Tuesday in the official newspaper La Gaceta grants the Companion of Companion Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential adviser for investment, trade and international cooperation, to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between the International Cooperation Agency for Development of the People’s Republic of China and the Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic of Nicaragua on the planning for development cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and Nicaragua during the period 2025-2027.
This period until 2027 exceeds Ortega’s presidential term, which after the last questioned votes will be in power until 2026. The dictator has been in power for 17 consecutive years.
Another agreement
And Presidential Agreement 106-2024, also published Tuesday in La Gaceta, grants “Plenos Powers to Companion Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential adviser for investments, trade and international cooperation, so that, acting on behalf and representing the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua, you can sign the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Nicaragua.
Both agreements provide that the certification of this Presidential Agreement is sufficient to demonstrate the power of comrade Laureano Ortega Murillo to act on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua in accordance with the content of article 1 of this instrument.
The Ortega regime and his wife, Rosario Murillo, restored diplomatic relations with China in December 2021, since then, have approached to sign a series of agreements, including a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Laureano Ortega has always been the protagonist in relations with China, but also in relations with Russia and other countries related to the dictatorship, which makes critics believe that this particular son is Ortega’s successor to occupy the presidency after his eventual death.
